Bad Lieutenant - Never Cry Another Tear (Triple Echo) ****

After the not so happy split within the New Order ranks everyone waited to see what would transpire next. Bernard Sumner put together Bad Lieutenant with the help of Phil Cunningham and Jake Evans. Drummer, Stephen Morris, also appears on the number of tracks.

There was a buzz about this project for a while, so the expectations were quite high. The music however is very typical of what Sumner got us used to over the years. It’s solid, melodic, and filled with positive energy. There is something about this album as it commands repeated listens, and one does not grow tired of it.

The New Order comparisons are obvious, and rightfully so there are plenty of reminiscent moments. Sumner’s style will always be linked with that band, but that’s perfectly fine. When you have a style you have a style, and everyone knows how difficult that is to accomplish. And style does equal career. For good measure Sumner probably would’ve gotten away with calling this New Order, but I’m glad he didn’t. It’s a very respectful move. Bad Lieutenant is just fine continuing Sumner’s musical journey.

The music on this album is instantly recognizable. Even if you feel, nothing new is accomplished here; the number of repeated spins will assure how solid of a record this is. And there is couple of solid radio-friendly tracks that could elevate this project to new heights. Never Cry Another Tear is an indication of a good start, and even better things to come.
