Benny Andersson - Story Of A Heart (Decca)***1/2

Benny Andersson is known for his work as the songwriter for Abba. This album however is mixture of different styles. One hand it may sound like a very confusing record, but on the other it’s what makes it pleasant. The music here varies from pop songs to classical pieces, to accordion-driven songs with strong polka-like influences. In other words, there are many faces of Benny Andersson.

On some of the songs Anderson reunites with his old partner, Bjorn Ulvaeus, from the Abba days, and results are spectacular. The duo didn’t miss a beat, and still knows how to hammer out a perfect melody. The title cut, Story of a Heart, could’ve easily been written for Abba, as it possesses all the trademarks required. And great delivery by Helen Sjoholm, full of passion and drama cannot go unnoticed.

Benny Anderson Band is a big affair; this group involves 14 players, and is truly like a miniature orchestra. The players appear to be seasoned, and their craft is very impressive. Benny Anderson is a world class writer who can do anything he wants to do at this point. This album is a great testament to that.
