Brian Auger's Oblivion Express - Fitzgerald's, Berwyn 8/29/10
A real legend makes it back to the Chicago area. After watching the sound check, I knew the audience was in for a special treat. Brian's energy was unstoppable, right after playing few tunes to see how the machinery is operating, Brain started telling rock'n'roll stories, and literary became a comedy act. He was just very funny. And it was only the intro to what turned out to be an excellent evening.

Taking the stage at 7:30, the band started to play their classics. As if you didn't guess the Hammond sound dominated the music, and it was truly amusing to see Brain in action. At 71 years old, he quickly proved he is still at top of his game. The enthusiasm and dedication to his craft was unmistakable. The man was having fun, and clearly enjoying himself, as was the rest of the band.
The band consisted two of Brain's kids, Karma on drums, and Savannah on vocals. Rounding out the lineup was Nicklas Sample (who also has a famous father, Joe Sample of The Crusaders,) on bass. This was a great combination, and certainly worked magic this evening. Savannah's vocal delivery was great, and complemented the music, not to mention a great stage presence. The rhythm exchange between Karma and Nicklas was exemplary. What a way to keep the bottom end under total control. All of this provided great stage for Brian to shine. Auger's finger attacked those keyboards at such precision one could wonder if he has more than two hands.

The band played many of its classics. Songs such as "Straight Ahead," "Whenever You're Ready," "Season Of The Witch," or "Second Wind" were great crowd pleasers. In fact every song got a great reception, not to mention the individual keyboard solos Brain unleashed upon the unsuspecting crowd within each track.
The crowd was completely into what Auger was doing, and some fans came from as far as Texas to see the show. One cannot ignore such dedication. Brain Auger's Oblivion Express is perhaps one of the best kept secrets as far as live performance goes, it's an event to remember. A master at work indeed.
