CSNY-Déjà Vu (Lionsgate)
Déjà Vu is a documentary of CSNY’s 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour. CSNY backed up Neil Young, and his Living with War record. It was a very ballsy and controversial tour as it targeted the war in Iraq, and the abusive Bush administration. Having witnessed one of the concerts it was very interesting to see the behind the scenes. The best part was the humane side of the band and its members. As we all know CSNY are of the advance age, and face the limitations that come with that age. So seeing someone like Steven Stills fall down on stage, and gracefully recover is very personal. And more power to Stills for not objecting to this part being featured in the movie.
There is a lot of humor, and sadness, but the general mood is very serious. The tour was not always received well. There are some rather disturbing scenes from Atlanta, and some very disgruntled fans speak their minds out. The reactions vary, as they should, and the documentary focuses on both sides. Some touching moments from parents remembering their loved ones lost in Iraq. Many heartfelt emotions are portrayed here.
CSNY’s support for the troops and the veterans is sincere and genuine. They just don’t necessary agree with forces that out them in harm’s way. The funniest comment comes from Stills, who pretty much steals the show. Stills compares Young to Tony Orlando, and remaining CSN to Dawn. The Dixie Chicks remark during the comedy shows is very funny as well.
Déjà vu is a very entertaining documentary. It’s not just a concert, it’s the whole story. The band steps up to the challenge, and gets their views around. In many ways, it was a historic event, and should be judged kindly in years to come.
