Cynic - Re-Traced (Season of Mist) ****

Re-Traced is an EP or a mini album if you should call it. It contains the re-interpreted versions of some Traced In Air material. The EP marks a big growth for the band. It shows how a group can live with the material and allow it to evolve in an undisclosed direction. Big thumbs up for that!

Cynic is a band never afraid of experimenting and moving forward. They did come out of the death metal scene, but it's a scene they've clearly outgrown, much like a child outgrows toys. Not to say the elements of death metal aren't there. In many ways Re-Traced feels like a springboard to something completely new, and that's very exciting.

Re-Traced's dreamy feel, and self-reflective tone is an addictive listen. The EP is short, and does not overwhelm the listener, this could be its charm as well. But as soon it's over you sure want to listen to it again....and again. I can't hardly wait to see where Cynic will take us next.
