Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (Capitol) ****

Sounds of the Universe is a great record for a cold evening. The album has a sound that reflects the mood of such time. I guess late night with dim lights would work too. It’s not an instant register with the listener. It takes a few spins in order to comprehend what is really going on here. The hooks are rather hidden, and require the listener to explore. On the other hand, it’s what makes this record very attractive. Once I understood the dynamics, it was difficult to put it down.

Depeche Mode is a band that evolved tremendously over the years. Just listen to any of the early 80s records. In retrospect, the band never stopped growing. The new album shows the band moving in its destined path.

There are some very memorable tracks such as the opening In Chains, Wrong, Peace, or Jezebel. But the whole record is filled with great tracks. The tracks tend to supplement themselves. Also, the running order is just perfect.

Sounds of the Universe will certainly please the band’s fan base, and will generate interest among the casual listeners.
