Foreigner – Can’t Slow Down (Rhino) ****
It’s been a while since any new Foreigner music was released. The last studio album dates back to 1995. Since then the band had undergone serious line up changes. Mick Jones is the only original member left. Gone is the long-time voice of Foreigner Lou Gramm. His replacement is Kelly Hansen. The line up is once again expanded to a six-man group, much like it was on the debut album.
The biggest question is of course the vocals; after all Gramm’s voice was the instant recognition factor for Foreigner. Hansen’s similarity to Gramm is unbelievably close. He does have a good style of his own, but his ability to find himself within Foreigner’s style is remarkable. Similar scenario was recently accomplished by Journey.
The music on Can’t Slow Down is very catchy and melodic. There are many songs that stand out as potential hits. Whether they will be picked up by that radio is another story. Mick Jones never had a problem coming up with melodic songs, and Can’t Slow Down is certainly no exception. The album is generally a quick and enjoyable listen. The songs vary from fast paced rockers to romantic ballads and everything in between. The music generally resembles every stage Foreigner went through in their 30 years of existence. After just few listens you’ll find yourself humming along to many of the songs.
Can’t Slow Down is a record worthy of the moniker. Foreigner was able to maintain the integrity and preserve its signature sound. Jones’ songwriting and Hansen’s vocal flexibility carry the record nicely. This is not a mere continuation of the band, but the beginning of a new chapter. Thumbs up on all accounts!
