Jeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion (Atco) ***

Jeff Beck is a real musical chameleon. You’ll never know from which angle he will attack, but when he does, it is always in style. Ever since returning with Who Else? Back in 1999, Jeff Beck was pretty consistent as far as the releases go. His playing is flawless, and still filled with so much passion and emotion. The title of this album is not coincidental; there is a lot of emotion in his playing.

One negative aspect of this album is that it appears to be rushed to sort of be a release to capitalize on the momentum. Recently Jeff Beck did some very high profile shows with Eric Clapton, which brought a lot of attention to his name. While his playing is spectacular, the songs seem a little bit rushed, and the inclusion of Over the Rainbow is simply pointless.

Two of the tracks feature Joss Stone on vocals, and she really pumped life into these tracks. Stone’s soulful delivery is definitely a highlight here. The same can be said about Olivia Safe’s vocals in Elegy for Dunkirk.

Jeff Beck made a good album, his playing and his tone still in tact. But, there is something which leaves the listener hungry for more. And there is no doubt in my mind the best is yet to come. The potential is already visible.
