Jethro Tull - Aqualung - 40th Anniversary Special Edition (Chrysalis/EMI)

"Aqualung" is what established Jethro Tull. It's an album that gave them eternal life. There is not a Jethro Tull show in which does not include at least two songs from this award winning record. Not that the rest of the catalog can be written off, actually it can't because it's equally as impressive, but this album came out at the right time and made an incredible impression.

When the album came out in 1971, it quickly struck a chord with the fans, and cemented Tull's place in a rock'n'roll history. Everything about this album was magical. The mysterious looking beautiful gatefold cover, and the timeless music inside. Here completely re-mastered and re-mixed by Porcupine Tree's Steven Wilson. This edition comes with a bonus disc of unreleased material from the same time period. As good as the original release is, the second disc complements it nicely, and allows the listener to see the whole picture. The sound is absolutely great.

In addition, the set comes with a very informative booklet with photos, and liner notes. The band really dug deep in their archives, and found photos this writer does not recall ever seeing again. Also, there are notes from Steven Wilson regarding his role in the project. A very comprehensive bundle indeed.

"Aqualung" sounds very refreshed, but as always strong and definitive. Despite its 40 years in regular circulation, this record may and will be enjoyed for generations to come. The album has a style, and a very original approach to songwriting. The anniversary edition treats the album with respect and dignity it deserves.
