Levon Helm Band - Chicago Theater, Chicago 6/9/09
Seeing a headlining set from Levon Helm was a real treat. He often comes through Chicago as an opener with much shorter playing time. Needless to say I was looking forward to this concert.
Helm delivered the goods and played for over two hours. Opening with The Band’s Ophelia, Helm set the mood just right. The show was a good mix of the present and the past. There was a number of people there cheering for the classics. Their efforts were rewarded in form of Long Black Veil, Rag Mama Rag, The Shape I’m In, Chest Fever, and The Weight. The older songs were played with real drive and enthusiasm of the back up band. Vocal Parts were often shared by the band members. This added a bit of a spark to the songs. There were a number of tracks from Helm’s excellent Dirt Farmer record. Those songs were meant for a live presentation. In addition, Helm presented four new cuts from his forthcoming album. Despite the unfamiliarity of the tracks, they sounded great and were catchy. The preview of the new music clearly indicates Helm may have another classic on his hands.
The Levon Helm band did a very impressive job on stage. Helm was a very active performer, alternating between drums, and mandolin. The band played great, and was not afraid to take chances. The horn section was absolutely fabulous. They brought that New Orleans element into the show, but at times had the Blues Brothers element as well. Needless to say each performer was very impressive.
I was very impressed by Helm’s endurance and the inner strength as a performer. After all the man is a cancer survivor and such performances are energy consuming. Helm’s story is inspiring and motivating.
After the show I stood outside trying to get a closer glimpse at the man. I had a photo of Helm and his dog in the cornfield. He signed the photo, even signed for the dog. Thank you Mr. Helm!
