Marbin (Self-Release) ****1/2
Marbin is duo formed by guitarist, Dani Rabin, and saxophonist, Danny Markovitch. Their moniker appears to be the combination of both last names. They are a band from Israel with a new home-base in Chicago.
While I’m not crazy about the name it’s always the music that matters. Marbin is a band with exceptional talent destined to go places. Their blend of instrumental jazz combined with space-like imagery is very original. In fact, you’re under the impression that Marbin wants to paint pictures with their sounds. This music could certainly work in many settings, and it does.
Some comparisons that come to mind are early Pink Floyd (Atom Heart Mother time-frame), or the experimentation of Popol Vuh. Those comparisons however do not last beyond the 5 minute mark. It’s not that easy to pin it down, and it’s a very exciting fact at the same time. Listening to Marbin is a trip into the unknown.
Instrumentally, both Rabin and Markovitch are very accomplished players. Their delivery is very delicate yet incredibly effective. But it’s not the playing ability that stands out here. What appeals the most is the originality of the songwriting and the clearly-visible chemistry. It’s what makes this album so emotionally charged. Marbin is a strange but beautiful animal.
