Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge (Universal) Deluxe Edition
Mike Oldfield is a phenomenal instrumentalist, and a very unique musician. "Hergest Ridge" is his second album, and a follow up to a mega successful "Tabular Bells." The album was originally released back in 1974. It was a very deep and complicated record, an album that required a commitment from the listener. The rewards were of course extremely satisfying. The original CD release of "Hergest Ridge" was shortened due to some technical problems, so this deluxe edition is a welcome release. It comes out as a three disc set. Two CDs, and an audio DVD. The first disc is Mike Oldfield's recent mixes of the album, and it truly sounds fantastic. The CD is enriched by two rare single tracks. "In Dulci Jubilo" is particularly a great find, as the track often grace Oldfield's live set list. The second disc includes the original sounding version of the album released in 1974, and the demos Oldfield initially recorded for the record. It's great to hear the album in its working stage, and follow the direction it takes. The DVD is the 5.1 Surround Sound mixes by Mike Oldfield. The whole package comes with some very insightful notes regarding the album. The only drawback is the inclusion of the new cover. While it does not affect the music in any way, it's difficult to picture any other image associated with "Hergest Ridge."
