Papamichael World Group - Open Heart (self-release) ****
Papamichael World Group hails from Georgia, and specializes in instrumental rock music. As the album unfolds, a variety of influences come to mind to describe this band. From the very first note it becomes obvious these guys are no beginners, they have their chops down, and are not afraid to do damage. This however is done in a very tasteful way, and that's probably one of the better ways to describe the players.
Lead by guitarist Anthony Papamichael, and accompanied by over twenty special guests, the album sports a feel of perfection. Papamichael's guitar is in the centre of all things, and he is a very impressive player. While not sticking to one definite style, Papamichael displays a great mix of rock, blues, funk, jazz, and fusion. His playing shows a variety of influences, and some of his transitions just have that great southern feel. Not a player easily pinned down, this bird can fly with the best of them.
"Open Heart" is a very multi-dimensional record. Each tracks has a lot going inside, it's not just those sweet melodies you hear after the first listen. These players get down and dirty making each song like an enigma machine. Just listen to the bass and percussion sequences! There is one spoken word performance which is very memorable. The track in question is "Surreal," and Marie Barboza with her penetrating voice utters the words in French.
Papamichael World Group is absolutely fantastic! There is a lot of love coded into these sounds. After repeated listens the album electrifies with its freshness, and one of a kind mood. A feel much missed from what the mainstream is offering nowadays.
