Proto-Kaw - Forth (Numavox) ****

Proto-Kaw is of course a band driven by Kerry Livgren. Livgren of course made his name as a guitar player, and the main composer for Kansas. Proto-Kaw was in fact one of the band he was in before Kansas, and the band was supposed to disband after the last tour. The album here come as a surprise, but a very pleasant surprise.

It's a very strong record, filled with great melodies, and well timed tracks. Livgren knows how to write great songs, and he truly shines here once again. His songwriting is very relaxed, but at the same time well planned, with some incredible arrangements. Livgren's got that classic rock touch, and that's just instant. The lyrics are of spiritual nature, but at this point we came to expect that. They're classy, and often follow into self-discovery.

"Forth" is a very catchy record, and for an album that was never meant to be, it rocks hard. As sad as the announcement of Proto-Kaw's demise, it's equally exciting to welcome them back. Let's hope the journey will continue for many years to come.
