Saga - The Human Condition (SPV) ****1/2
Saga is back with a new singer. Rob Moratti steps into the vacant vocal slot left by Michael Sadler. In many ways, this feels like a new beginning for Saga. Despite being around for 30 years, this is a very fresh sounding album.
The Human Condition shows Saga taking chances, and writing songs they fit Moratti’s vocal range. Considering the fact, he is a very different singer; it changes the dynamics of the group. What Saga did with Sadler was great, but different, and the same could be said about the current line up. Saga is having a fresh start, while maintaining their style developed over the last 30 years.
The songs on this record are flowing. There are plenty of memorable hooks. Some memorable moments include Step Inside, A Number with a Name, and Crown of Thorns. Actually the whole record is just great to listen to all the way through, and then of course a repeat listen is required as well. It feels like a new band, but it’s not. It is still Saga doing what they do best, in a slightly different dressing. The Human Condition is a sign of great music yet to come.
