Silver Mountain - Shakin’ Brains/Universe (Metal Mind/MVD)

Silver Mountain is a legendary Swedish heavy metal band. Its influence is still felt throughout the metal community. Shakin’ Brains is much sought after collector’s item. Of all Silver Mountain albums, this is the one you want the most. Released originally back in 1983, Shakin’ Brains, became an instant classic. The music can be described as traditional heavy metal influenced by Deep Purple/ Rainbow. In comparison to the recent production, Shakin’ Brains, may appear dated, but bands like Silver Mountain were inventing the genre as they went along. The spirit of the time is still there, and it remains strong. Universe was the second release, and it was a much-polished release. It is still a strong record, but not as exciting as the debut. Gone were the Johansson brothers, who went to join the Yngwie Malmsteen’s band. Universe was catchy and melodic, it just didn’t have the aggressiveness of Shakin’ Brains. While both records are extremely enjoyable today, back then it took a while to understand the charm of Universe.
