Status Quo - In Search of The Fourth Chord (Eagle Records) ****

Status Quo is well established act and well on their course. This is only their 33rd album; they pretty much know what they are doing. Since defining their style in the early 70s, the band is very consistent and faithful to it. Status Quo was always much more popular in Europe, but enjoyed loyal and dedicated (but limited) following on this side of Atlantic as well.

In Search of The Fourth Chord is a great dose of boogie based rock’n’roll only Status Quo knows how to deliver. The record is upbeat and keeps you pretty much rocking at a steady pace. There some slower tunes, but the majority is just jeans’n’strings.

The band is having a nice go at them with the title of this record. Yeah, it’s true you won’t find Yes-like structures here, but what you do find is very effective and basic. Status Quo knows how to write a good catchy rocking song. This record is full of them.

In Search of The Fourth Chord will not break any new barriers, and is certainly nothing new if you followed the band for a while. It shows a great band at work doing what they do best. Just the fact this album received a Stateside release is a motivating factor to explore the band. You might be surprised to find some intense well-played rock’n’roll.
