Rolling Stones - Some Girls (Universal Republic)
Many say "Some Girls" was the last great Rolling Stones record. While others beg to differ and argue the point, it was a groundbreaking album. It cemented the band's relevance, and showed they were able to keep up with the times. And in 1978, it was exactly what the band needed. The album combines the explosion of punk and disco, rock, and that New York attitude. It has all of the components of a successful record, and on top of it, the songs are good too. Who could argue with "Miss You," Far Away Eyes," "Shattered," or "Beast of Burden." When you write songs like that after more than 10 years into your career, you know you're made of gold.
The reissue includes the original record, in a re-mastered form, and a disc of rarities. The extra CD includes 12 unreleased tracks. It shows how much material they had to choose from, and how the creative process worked within the band. "Some Girls" is old enough to be considered a classic, although it certainly became a classic overnight back in 1978.
With so many different reissues and re-masters of the Rolling Stones material, it's difficult to pick what the definite versions are, but the addition of the bonus disc certainly adds to the excitement. And for the collectors this is once again a dream come true!
