Stratovarius - Polaris (Armoury Records) ****

Stratovarius had been through a lot over the last few months, or even years. Some of the reports coming from the band were hard to believe. There was definitely a lot of unrest in the Stratovarius camp. One big change came out of it, Timo Tolki, left the band. Tolki was the founder of Stratovarius, and a main songwriter. He is being replaced here by Matias Kupiainen. Kupiainen is clearly a capable guitar player who fits Stratovarius perfectly.

Polaris was a big test for the band. Can they do it without Tolki? That was the big question. Surprisingly enough the new record sounds very refreshing, so they can certainly do it without Tolki. The band is playing great, but it’s the material, it’s just simply strong. The songs are catchy, well structured and developed. Each track has a lot going in it. The progressive rock influence is ever-present, and well camouflaged into band’s style.

There is no doubt Stratovarius undertook this challenge seriously, and worked hard to make this album the best it can be. Every musician here is giving 100 % effort. This is strongly felt throughout the record. Polaris does not bring anything new to already well established style, but it nicely maintains the best aspects of it.
