Uli Jon Roth - Reggie's, Chicago 1/27/12

Uli Jon Roth doesn't come too often to Chicago, but when he does, you're guaranteed an unforgettable performance. Such was the case with his most recent visit. During the day Roth was busy teaching at his Sky Academy, where aspiring musicians came to advance their musical spectrums, and at night it was just the show time for everyone. Large crowd gathered at Reggie's, anticipating another spectacle of sheer musicality.

Uli Jon Roth took the stage and within few guitar notes completely owned the place. His tone and delivery was crystal clear, fantastic timing and plenty of room for improvisation. Roth presented music known from his time with the Scorpions, his solo act, Electric Sun, and a few Jimi Hendrix covers thrown in between for a good measure. All of which made up for a one magical show.

The backup band was absolutely perfect. With two additional guitar players, and a capable singer, Roth was able to pull off anything he wished from his impressive catalog. This worked especially well with the older Scorpions tracks which required a singer with a melodic higher register. While the backup band was incredibly good, the focus was clearly on Uli Jon Roth. Roth electrified the crowd with his flawless delivery, and a very spiritual approach to his instrument. The guitar was an extension of him, and the music was just flowing from the center of Roth's soul.

It was 2 hours of great music, delivered with an incredible style. The audience was ecstatic, and despite a few small technical problems, the show was just absolutely perfect. The intimate nature of the club was also very helpful. There was definitely a close bond between the audience and the performer. And a very special moment for this writer, when Uli Jon Roth dedicated "We'll Burn The Sky" to my recently departed (and much missed) friend Alex, who was and is a big fan of the guitarist in his own right.

Uli Jon Roth scores big with the Chicago audience, but has been a favorite in these parts of the country ever since his memorable performance at The Cabaret Metro back in 1985. A beautifully crafted evening of musical spirituality. Nothing more to add, other than a big "astral" thank you!
