Voivod - Tatsumaki Voivod Japan 2008 (MVD)
After the loss of guitarist Denis “Piggy” D’Amour the band was facing a grim future. D’Amour was such a strong force, and such an original musician. Voivod however decided to carry on. With the help of Dan Mongrain, the band was able to bounce back. This DVD shows the reassembled Voivod on stage in Japan.
Voivod is playing great to an enthusiastic crowd. The show highlights all Voivod’s best material, and these songs sound still as futuristic as they did when they were written. This catalog simply does not age. The performance is very intense. Of course all eyes are on Mongrain, and he is doing a great job getting all of the Piggy’s guitar parts right. The line up also features Blacky back on bass taking over from Jason Newsted.
This is a very convincing show, proving there could be life after Piggy. As sad as the metal community was when Piggy passed away, this is a nice welcome back. Voivod deserves to be functioning; it deserves to be continuously heard.
In addition to the performance the DVD features an unreleased French documentary and an interview with Dave Grohl. Grohl is a self-professed Voivod fan, and he’s proven that on more than one occasion. The DVD is a relevant testament to a great band.
