The Wishing Tree – Ostara (Eagle Records) ****
The Wishing Tree is a band consisting of Marillion’s Steve Rothery and vocalist Hannah Stobart. Rothery is very instrumental in here as he supplies everything apart from the drums. But it is Stobart’s sensual vocals that set the mood for this release.
The Wishing Tree is a very mood oriented, and atmospheric band. The band is based on deepness, and is very reflective in it. It takes a few listens before the listener understands the message here. It is difficult to compare The Wishing Tree to anyone, as they truly stand on their own feet. Comparing it to Marillion is pointless, as the two bands sound nothing like each other. Rothery was right saying The Wishing Tree is a way for him to explore other musical areas.
The music can be described as very delicate, yet is does hold certain amount of power. The vocals certainly drive the project, and enrich the melodies. The songs have a way of pulling the listener in, as they require complete attention. The album certainly does work in many setting, but listening to it in the evening, by the candlelight, and with a glass of wine in your hand can be very rewarding.
